For the touristc Sutivan, the motto, written on the door of the castle of poet-nobleman Jerolim Kavanjin, who wrote the poem of 35 000 verses "Riches and Poverty", says: "Open only to friends", signifies the basic occupation of the inhabitants of this Mediterranean town.
Sutivan is connected with all places on the island of Brac with modern roads. There is only about five minutes by car to Supetar and from there car-ferries very frequently go to the mainland, to Split. There are direct catamaran connection with Split on weekends. In pleasant Mediterranean enviroment, Sutivan possessed all necessary contents and guests are offeredaccommodations in small boarding-houses, private hotels, private rooms and apartments. Around Sutivan, in two microlimate zones, there are ten beautiful beaches and cosy coves, rich plantations of olive-groves, tangerines and other Mediterranean fruit and vegetables. Also, there are numerous sports playgrounds, trim paths and walks.
The name Sutivan derives from St. Ivan, because of the old parish and basilica of St. John Baptist, built in the 6th century. Sutivan was first settled by Ilyrians, later came the Romans and last arrived the Croats. Around Sutivan were built the old manor houses of families Ilic, Kavanjin, Definis and Luksic, and specially are picturesque numerous "mansion - houses" of different old families. Sutivan offers complete gastronomic services in many restaurants, caffee-bars, disco-clubs, farmer`s houses, etc. There are also plenty of small shops. |
