ZIRJE, an island in the Sibenik archipelago, about 22 km southwest of Sibenik; area 15.4 sq km (length 11.8 km, width up to 2.5 km); population 160; the highest peak Kapic (131 m). The island is composed of limestone, which forms two mountain ridges; between them is a fertile valley. The sea west of Zirje is rich in fish. On the northern coast of the island are the coves of Mikavica, Muna, Koromasna and Japlenisce. The coves of Kabal, Mala and Vela Stupica, Krusevica, Tratinska, Velika and Mala Nozdrva are located on the southern coast. Winters are mild, summers are dry and warm; the island is exposed to northerly and southerly winds; annual rainfall is 753 mm. In the central part of the valley and in the 35-m deep hole located near Gradina, sufficient water is found to water cattle almost throughout the year. The island is mainly covered with underbrush. Chief occupations are farming, viticulture, olive and fruit growing, livestock breeding, fishing and tourism. The only bigger village on the island is Zirje, situated somewhat away from the coast; a road connects the village with the cove of Muna on the northern coast, where the hamlet of Muna is located as well. Ferry lines with the surrounding islands and with Sibenik.
