Personal identification documents required for foreign nationals entering the Republic of Croatia

Foreign nationals entering Croatia must possess one of the following identification documents: foreign travel document, travel document for aliens, or some other document recognized by bilateral agreements.

Foreign travel documents

Foreign nationals can enter the Republic of Croatia with a valid travel document issued by a foreign country. Foreign travel documents are the following:

  • passport (personal or family)

  • group passport

  • diplomatic passport

  • official passport

  • seaman's discharge book

  • seaman's sailing book

  • other travel document recognized by international treaties.

Travel document for aliens

Foreign nationals can enter Croatia and stay there also with valid travel documents for aliens issued by the competent authority of the Republic of Croatia. Travel documents for aliens are the following:

  • travel document for refugees

  • travel document for stateless persons

  • travel paper for aliens.

Personal identity card

The citizens of the Republic of Slovenia may enter the Republic of Croatia with personal identification cards.
The border police shall deny entry into the Republic of Croatia to any foreign national whose identity it cannot establish.

Cessation of validity (expiry) of a foreign travel document

According to current practice, a foreign national is admitted into the Republic of Croatia even if his or her foreign travel document expires on the following day. When it appears likely that the foreign travel document will expire during the foreign national's stay in Croatia, the passport officer notifies the foreign national of that fact and he or she is required to extend the validity of the document in the diplomatic/consular representation of his country in the Republic of Croatia.

Loss of the foreign travel document or other identification document

The loss of the travel document, border pass or any other identification document must be reported to the nearest police station immediately and not later than 24 hours after the event. In this case, the police issues the foreign national with an official notification of the loss, on the basis of which he or she can obtain a new travel document from the diplomatic/consular representation of his country in the Republic of Croatia.

Border pass

Validity:  The border pass remains valid for three months.
Tax:  No tax or duty is charged for the border pass.
