Picturesque Kastel Stari is the oldest of seven settlements placed on the beautiful coastline between Trogir and Split. The settlement first developed on fertile flatland suitable for the growing of grapes and fruit. Due to its splendid beaches, Croatian aristocrats built many summer residences and fortifications in Kastel Stari in the 15th century.
The Croatian Climbing Society (HPD) was founded in 1874, which puts the Croats among the first seven nations in the world with a climbing organization. It is of interest that at the beginning climbing in Croatia was directed towards scientific research into the natural features of the mountains, and less towards the conquest of peaks. Read
