vir

The island of Vir is situated about 25 kilometeres northwest of Zadar in Northern Dalmatia, connected to the mainland by a bridge. With a total surface of 22.5 square kilometres Vir - the Italians called the island "Punata Dura" (rockt coast) - represents a varying landscape: bare rocks are alternating with pine trees and vineyards, with figs and olives.

The coastline measures 31 kilometres - in majority natural and almost untouched sandy and pebble beaches with crystal clear water are making from this island a paradise for family holidays. A fresh breeze tempers the midsummer tempertaures and is offering good conditions for windsurfers.

With almost 300 sunny days per year Vir is even in spring and autumn worth to be visited - on the highest elevation, Bandira (112 metres) wanderers will enjoy the breathtaking panorama across Vir to the surrounding islands and the Velebit, the 1,750 metres high mountain-range on the mainland. Furthermore, Vir is highly recommended for skilled mountain bikers.

But in first place, Vir is a paradise for skippers - they will not only find safe moorings and marinas on Vir, but as well a chain of about 300 islands and islets nearby - among them the national park Kornati.

Holiday accommodation is offered exclusively on a private basis: family-boarding houses as well as private rooms and apartments - big hotel settlements you wan't find on Vir. Restaurants and cafes with shaded terraces, supermarkets various shops, ambulances and post-office are completing the offer.

VIR WITH PLEASURE SAYS WELCOME AND INVITES YOU TO DISCOVER THE CONTRASTS OF THE ISLAND...
